Some children were able to respond to the questions typically answered by children of an older age, so these children had a higher mental age than their actual chronological age. Binet's measure of intelligence was based on the average abilities of children of a particular age group. Intelligence tests are designed to measure a person's problem-solving and reasoning abilities. Your score on an IQ test indicates how well you did on these tests of mental abilities compared to other people in your age group.

Logic, spatial awareness, verbal reasoning, and visual abilities are some of the key areas assessed by many IQ tests. An IQ test is not something that you can really study for in order to improve your score. While you might often hear that brilliant individuals, including Albert Einstein and Steven Hawking, possessed IQs of or higher, or that certain presidential candidates have specific IQs, these numbers are simply estimates.

In most of these cases, there is no evidence that these well-known individuals ever took a standardized IQ test, let alone shared these results with the public. IQ scores have also increased with passing generations. Since the s when standardized tests first became widespread, researchers have noted a sustained and significant increase in test scores among people all over the world. Flynn has suggested that this increase is due to improvements in our abilities to solve problems, think abstractly, and utilize logic.

In a TED Talk, Flynn explained that past generations largely had to deal with the concrete and specific problems of their immediate environments. Not only that, but approaches to education have changed dramatically over the past 75 years and more people tend to have jobs identified as cognitively demanding.

IQ tests are indeed interesting, but it's important to remember that they are not the only measurement of intelligence. They focus on certain areas of our abilities and, while they do point to how smart a person may be academically, there are areas in life that someone may be better at than others. There has been a lot of debate about the validity of standardized tests for intelligence for minority groups and people who have had disadvantaged educational opportunities and a disadvantaged homelife. While I believe that there has been some improvement in the newer standardized tests for intelligence, it could still be possible for someone in this situation to have a higher ability than their full scale score indicates.

It is also possible for persons who once scored very high on an intelligence test to have a lower score when re-examined years later. Age, a progressive illness such as Alzheimer's Disease, or quite simply not using one's abilities can cause intelligence potential to decrease. I have come across students in my clinic experience who scored very high at a young age, but due to long-term underachievement, or not being challenged academically, show a drop in their scores to a more average range.

People are also not always uniformly gifted in their abilities. A person may be a gifted writer but have average mathematical skills and vice versa. Psychologist Dr. Howard Gardner's theory of Multiple Intelligences states that a person can be gifted in one or more of several areas: linguistic, musical, mathematical, spatial, bodily such as a great athlete or dancer , and interpersonal intelligences.

Counseling services can also be helpful, allowing the child to confide in someone they can trust. Parents must also work with teachers to understand the learning styles and preferences of the gifted learner and challenge them to maximize their potential. Gifted children need support for both academic and social-emotional development.

Depending on where you live and which school district you are in, this might include ability grouping, gifted pull-out classes or access to gifted public schools. Outside of school, gifted programs may offer gifted students the chance to further explore a unique subject of interest, or they can provide a place to form social connections with intellectually-similar peers.
